“The Mermaid Princess” has Chow’s work-class-selfish-good-comedy style features. Chow, as you often do, may be playing an exaggerated version of his sophisticated public officer here (apparently not). Liu Xuan, however, can easily be read as Chow’s stand-by: a rich, but “low class”, readable by Shan’s arrogant, mega-rich opponent Ruolan (Zhang Yuqi).
Live clothes and “Cribs” style parties are the most important features of Liu Xuan’s nouveau lifestyle, complementing the poolside babies and a decade-long wine. So when Shan emerges, everyone who wears makeup and ugly rubber weights to hide their fingers knows how to chase after Liu Xuan.
